Anyone got a canopy like anything this? I fancy one for the summer but are they any good? Dos and don'ts? Any recommendations?

I recommend you don't jump out the upstairs window onto it.

I had one at my last home.  Loved it.  Before we had it the back rooms got blisteringly hot in the summer.  With the canopy the rooms were much nicer plus of course we could sit out under it.  Get an electric one with a remote.

My Dad has got one and finds it very useful to give an area of shade in the summer.
Check where the sun is at what time of day/month to make sure it will be in the right place.
